Digitel earmarks $200M for cell
sites

Gokongwei-controlled Digital Telecommunications Phils., Inc. (Digitel)
has earmarked $200 million for the expansion of Sun Cellular’s
coverage and capacity this year to serve as many as six million
subscribers, the listed company said in a preliminary information
statement.
The company is targeting to complete 2,000 cell sites by yearend to
support the projected surge of subscribers.
Digitel provides voice and data services through wireless and
wireline technology. It is the second-largest provider of fixed
lines in the Philippines in terms of subscribed lines.
It commercially launched its wireless service Sun Cellular last
March 29, 2003. In October 2004, Sun Cellular launched its 24/7
unlimited call-and-text promo, boosting its subscriber base to more
than one million. By end-2006, the company expects to hit 2.8
million subscribers.
